Abstract: This study, which is part of a scientific research project funded by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Türkiye, takes an interdisciplinary approach investigating style in a corpus of Turkish literary translated texts for the purpose of determining the distinctive measurable characteristics of translator style and examining to what extent a customized machine translation system reflects a translator style when the system is trained on previous translations by the same translator.
Mehmet Şahin is professor in the Department of Translation and Interpreting Studies at Boğaziçi University. He completed his undergraduate studies in Translation and Interpretation at Bilkent University in Ankara, Turkey, where he also received a master’s degree in Teacher Education. He holds a PhD in Curriculum and Instruction with a concentration in Applied Linguistics/TESOL from Iowa State University. His doctoral research focused on computer-assisted language learning and educational technology. His current research interests include translation studies, translation and interpreting technologies, machine translation, and translator and interpreter education.
Tunga Güngör is professor in the Department of Computer Engineering at Boğaziçi University. He obtained his MS and PhD degrees from the same department. His research interests include artificial intelligence, natural language processing, machine translation, and machine learning. He is a member of the Artificial Intelligent Lab and the Text Analytics and Bioinformatics Lab at the department. He teaches undergraduate and graduate level courses on the topics of artificial intelligence, natural language processing, machine translation, and algorithm analysis.
Ena Hodzik is Assistant Professor at the Department of Translation and Interpreting Studies at Boğaziçi University. She completed her PhD in English and Applied Linguistics at the University of Cambridge. Her areas of research are interpreting process studies and corpus-based translation and interpreting studies. She is currently working as researcher on a project funded by the Turkish Scientific Research Council comparing translator style in literary human versus machine translation.
Sabri Gürses is a writer, translator, and researcher. He graduated from Istanbul University’s Department of Russian Language and Literature and then earned his master’s degree in Translation Studies from the same institution. He received his PhD in Russian Language and Literature from Erciyes University. He is the editor of Çeviribilim, an online translation journal, and runs the Çeviribilim Publishing House. He worked as a postdoctoral researcher at Boğaziçi University from 2021 to 2023. In 2009 he was awarded by the Pushkin Institute for his translation of Glossolalia by Andrei Bely; in 2018 his translation of Eugenie Onegin was shortlisted for the Read Russia (Читай Россию) Prize, and in 2020 he received the Prize for his Tolstoy translations.
Zeynep Yirmibeşoğlu is a teaching assistant and Ph.D. student at the Department of Computer Engineering at Boğaziçi University. She completed her Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering at Istanbul Technical University and obtained her Master’s degree in Computer Engineering at Boğaziçi University. She conducts research in natural language processing, deep learning, and machine translation, and is a member of the Artificial Intelligence Lab and the Text Analytics and Bioinformatics Lab at the department.
Harun Dallı is a master’s student in the Department of Translation and Interpreting Studies at Boğaziçi University in Istanbul. He holds a bachelor’s degree in English Language and Literature from Hacettepe University in Ankara. His research interests include audiovisual translation, pivot subtitling, and stylistics. Alongside his research assistantship, he combines his academic pursuits with his professional career as a subtitler.
Olgun Dursun is a master’s student in Cognitive Science Program at Boğaziçi University with a focus on computer science and linguistics. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Translation Studies from Boğaziçi University. His research areas include natural language understanding, machine translation, subword tokenization methods, morphological processing, and cognitive modelling.
